Essay contest: The Belgian-US Friendship -- How I see its Future.

Belgian students have an opportunity of winning a three week cultural stay in the United States. Want to participate? All you have to do is write an essay on Belgian-American relations with the following title: The Belgian-US Friendship -- How I see its Future.

The winner of the contest will travel to the U.S. to take part in the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Summer Institute at Wake Forest University in North Carolina from July 5, 2008 to July 30, 2008.

This U.S exchange initiative fosters friendships between young people in America and their counterparts in Europe and Central Asia. Activities will include leadership and media training, collaborative project development, community service, educational travel, and follow-up planning.

 

Eligibility

  • The contest is open to all Belgian students aged 17-19 (born between 30 July 1988 and 5 July 1991)
  • English fluency
  • Relatives of employees of the U.S. Embassy in Brussels are not eligible to participate

The essay must be

  • The original work of the student
  • Written in English
  • Between 500 and 750 words long

Essays will be judged according to their

  • Originality
  • Clear communication
  • Good organization of ideas
  • Convincing arguments supported with specific examples

Please adhere to the following time line

  • Essays must be sent in before February 8, 2008 to myamericadotbe@gmail.com
  • Finalists will be notified by February 22, 2008 and will be invited to a follow-up interview
  • The interview will focus on academic and community involvement, interest in the USA and participation in this summer program.
  • The winner’s name will be made public after February 29, 2008

AFS BelgiumBelgium Flanders is one of the most successful AFS organisations. This observation is based on factors such as recent growth, the high percentage of students that are sent to diversity countries, the strong volunteer network.

In 1948 the first four Belgian students left for the United States. The first American students came to Belgium in 1951. In 1958, an AFS Belgium office, supported by volunteers, was founded in Brussels.
