The International Short Film Festival Leuven will take place at the Cinema ZED in Leuven from November 28-December 5, 2009.  It was founded in 1995 and will be organized in 2009 for the 15th time.  Every year the festival presents a wide selection of great short films, both live action and animated films, documentaries, experimental work and music videos.  The Flemish and European short film competitions are the main focus of the festival.  Apart from competitive sections, the festival also presents retrospective compilations and thematic specials.

Er was eens een mooie prinses die luisterde naar de naam Sneeuwwitje. Haar stiefmoeder, de koningin, beseft dat het jonge meisje ooit mooier zal zijn dan zij. Ze gebiedt een jager om de prinses mee te nemen naar het woud en haar te doden. De jager kan het echter niet over zijn hart krijgen en besluit het meisje te sparen. De dieren in het woud leiden Sneeuwwitje naar een verborgen hutje. Wanneer ze wakker wordt, maakt ze kennis met de bewoners: zeven rare, maar vriendelijke dwergen. Ontsnapt Sneeuwwitje een tweede keer aan de jaloezie van de koningin, die haar wil vergiftigen? Deze eerste klassieker van de Disney-studios is 72 jaar na datum nog steeds actueel. Spiegeltje, spiegeltje, aan de wand, wie is de mooiste van heel het land?

Mais celui-ci, ne pouvant s’y résoudre, épargne la jeune fille. Guidée par des animaux, Blanche-Neige trouve alors refuge dans une chaumière perdue au fond des bois. à son réveil, elle fait la connaissance de ses propriétaires : sept nains aussi singuliers qu’adorables. Mais échappera-t-elle une nouvelle fois à la jalousie féroce de la Reine, bien décidée à l’empoisonner ? Entièrement restauré, ce premier classique visionnaire des Studios Disney est, 72 ans après sa sortie, plus indémodable encore que jamais ! Miroir, mon beau miroir, dis-moi qui est la plus belle ?

Duane Michals ou le présent composé

Rares sont les portraits de René Magritte qui ressemblent autant au peintre que celui qu’en fit Duane Michals à Bruxelles en 1965 : son corps s’inscrit dans le rectangle d’une toile posée sur un chevalet, la silhouette au chapeau melon s’effaçant dans la lueur d’une fenêtre qui l’aspire jusqu’à la dissoudre ; sur la chaise, le coussin a gardé l’empreinte de son corps, mais il n’est déjà plus là, fantôme traversé d’objets. Derrière le chevalet, le décor se prolonge sans interrompre ses lignes, comme dans le tableau La condition humaine. Seul, à gauche, le miroir a conservé indemne l’image de Magritte regardant œuvrer le photographe, victime et témoin de sa propre disparition. Composé comme le tableau d’un primitif flamand, la photographie déroge ici à la fraction temporelle, à l’instant extrait autant qu’à la tradition classique du portrait : c’est un temps composé, concen-   trant dans le décor d’une chambre divers moments reliés au personnage qui en est le sujet, à sa présence plus qu’à ses traits, un portrait démultiplié par les points de vue.

Un autre portrait d’un autre peintre surréaliste, Giorgio de Chirico, le montre assis dans un salon bourgeois lisant un journal tandis que son chien sommeille ; ici encore, le visage disparaît dans l’éclairage de la fenêtre qui l’encadre, le rendant à peine reconnaissable : la même scénographie est appliquée au sculpteur Joseph Cornell, se déplaçant à contre-jour, entre fenêtre et miroir, évoquant autant son portrait par Lee Miller qu’une sculpture longiforme de Giacometti, sa silhouette amenuisée par le mouvement.

L’intérêt porté à ces trois artistes – l’on pourrait ajouter les exemples de Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol ou Willem De Kooning – ne témoigne pas seulement de son admiration à leur endroit mais aussi d’une volonté de confronter ces praticiens des arts de la durée – la peinture, la sculpture – à la discipline de l’art de l’instant – la photographie –, celle-ci se fondant en celle-là, sans aller vers un mimétisme réducteur ou l’abandon d’une technique. Mieux que la volonté de représenter leurs traits, Duane Michals entreprend de photographier leur pensée, ce «portrait de l’âme» qu’évoquait Nadar, leur offrant une représentation inédite ; ils sont ce qu’ils sont, ce qu’ils ont été et déjà ce qu’ils deviendront, et le photographe même.

«L’intérêt pour la mort est chez moi obsessionnel, écrit Duane Michals1. D’une certaine façon, je me prépare à ma propre mort». L’on pourrait ici évoquer des personnages non tournés vers le spectateur ou le photographe, mais vers eux-mêmes, vers leur propre existence et leur destinée, tel François Truffaut se faisant face dans les miroirs d’une chambre d’hôtel à New York, trois mannequins hiératiques à la chevelure de grand duc.

Il s’agit donc pour Duane Michals d’étendre les possibilités de la photographie, en se gardant de l’influence directe de la peinture ou du cinéma, en s’échappant du photomontage comme du traditionnel roman-photo – souvent un film arrêté sur image – en se situant précisément entre toutes ces catégories. Montrer ce qui est derrière, ce qui est caché, ne pas se contenter d’une image unique, être ici et là, l’instant d’après et l’instant d’avant réunis au sein d’un même espace – l’atelier, le salon, la chambre – par la surimpression ou les reflets, par la séquence photographique dont Duane Michals s’est abondamment servi dès la fin des années soixante. Ces historiettes développent sur quatre, cinq, six ou huit images – lesquelles sont souvent redoublées par surimpressions – une continuité narrative qu’un texte calligraphié au bas parfois accompagne, comme la légende d’une illustration pour compléter l’image. L’espace est rarement clos : la fenêtre centrale est un puits de lumière plutôt qu’un balcon et le livre, le tableau, le miroir, disposés dans le champ sont autant d’échappées à l’image même, de perspectives pour s’y enfoncer ; l’image est aussi dans l’image, emmenant vers celle qui suit autant qu’en ses tréfonds, croisant les fantômes, les générations, en paraboles de l’âge aux accents mythologiques s’il n’y avait l’humour de Duane Michals, la beauté et la sensualité de ses modèles aux visages d’anges, égarés dans des décors quotidiens, tombés dans des chambres pour disparaître ensuite dans ce halo qui fait ailleurs des photographies voilées, mais pas chez Duane Michals.

Des contes éveillés, des rêves à faire peur, des histoires à ne pas dormir du tout dans des chambres étroites comme des maisons de poupées, avec ces fenêtres brûlées de jour, des anges dénudés navrés de ressembler autant aux humains, de succomber à leurs tentations, des esprits quittant leurs corps, des maisons que la mémoire restitue intactes, avec ceux qui les ont habitées, qui ne sont plus, ces proches et ces familiers dont les objets témoignent encore, si nets dans le souvenir comme au réveil d’un beau rêve qu’on croirait leur avoir parlé, les avoir touchés, avoir aboli la mort comme Peter Ibbetson retrouve Mimsey.
Duane Michals photographie le temps qui s’écoule comme les grains dans le sablier, comme pour déjouer la mort, pour se voir mort mais voir encore, une mort toujours au présent, en des photographies pour prolonger la photographie, un passeport pour dépasser le temps.

De Wilkinson American Movie Day is een instituut; een evenement waar alle Belgische cinefielen koortsachtig op zitten te wachten om in primeur enkele van de meest beloftevolle films uit de Verenigde Staten te kunnen bekijken. Dit is een dag waarop iedereen aan zijn trekken kan komen. En dat is dit jaar nog een beetje meer waar dan andere jaren.

Op 4 juli, op de Amerikaanse nationale feestdag, programmeren 5 complexen een hele dag lang deze 12 films. De meest fervente filmliefhebbers zullen die dag dus van de ene naar de andere filmzaal kunnen hollen om zo tot maximaal 4 nooit eerder vertoonde films te bekijken, lang voor de gewone sterveling ervan kan genieten. En daarom is de Wilkinson American Movie Day een instituut in het filmlandschap. Een evenement dat u niet mag missen.

 
Le Wilkinson American Movie Day est désormais une institution; un événement attendu avec avidité par tous les cinéphages belges pour découvrir en primeur quelques-uns des films les plus prometteurs en provenance des états-Unis. Cette année encore, ce n'est pas qu'un cliché, il y en aura vraiment pour tous les goûts.

Le 4 juillet, pour célébrer la fête nationale américaine, cinq complexes programmeront ces douze films pendant toute une journée. Les spectateurs les plus affamés pourront donc se glisser d'une salle à l'autre pour déguster jusqu'à quatre longs-métrages inédits, longtemps avant le commun des mortels. Oui, c'est incontestable, le Wilkinson American Movie Day est désormais une institution. Et un rendez-vous incontournable.

In the 30’s he studied philosophy at the universities of Stanford and Harvard, before changing disciplines and starting art classes at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and art history at the Columbia University, under Meyer Schapiro. He was interested in symbolist literature, psychoanalysis and oriental art, but admitted that the true content of his art is rather emotional than mental. Robert Motherwell was familiar with the printing world, fascinated by books, literature and printing, and engraving was one of his favourite activities.

The exhibition shows a retrospective of his printed work through a selection of around sixty engravings characterised by their innovative and experimental aspects.

Deerhunter is an American five-piece group originated from Atlanta, Georgia. The band, comprised of Bradford Cox, Moses Archuleta, Josh Fauver, Whitney Petty, and Lockett Pundt, have described themselves as "ambient punk," though they incorporate a wide range of genres, including noise rock, art rock, ambient, and post-punk. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.” (Wikipedia)

Ooit, ver weg in Atlanta, Georgia, schreef Deerhunter een beginselverklaring waarin ze naar eer en geweten verklaarden de hypnotiserende kracht van ambient aan de ruwe energie van garage rock te willen koppelen. Bij de productie van hun derde album 'Microcastle' werd een paar meters van dit ambitieuze plan afgeweken, maar het resultaat klinkt daarom niet minder appetijtelijk: opstandige songs die koppig een weg zoeken tussen psychedelische indierock en punk en daarbij genoeg bochten maken om zelfs een leger doorgewinterde sporenzoekers om de tuin te leiden. Frontman Bradford Cox (die ons eerder dit jaar onder het pseudoniem Atlas Sound wist te verrassen met uiterst degelijke knip- en plakpop) wist zijn troep te bevrijden van dikke lagen noise en port hen aan tot een razende rotvaart die live hypnotiserende verwarring zaait.(Cactus Muziekcentrum)

About Anathallo
It’s fitting that Chicago indie art-pop ensemble Anathallo traces its origins to a small Michigan town named Mt. Pleasant. There was no actual mountain nearby, but like most middle-class burgs, the place begged for input from active imaginations—for makeshift raft races on the Chippewa River, bridge dives in the summer, and rollerskating down the abandoned slides of an old water park. In the 16 years before the founding of Anathallo, Matthew Joynt’s days were filled with these things, and what space was left went to the arts: music lessons, theater productions, dance companies, limited engagement lip-sync shows (co-produced, for a parental audience of two, by his big sis), and a proto-grunge band called Clockwork that rehearsed like its namesake (6:30 a.m. every day before school). In 2000, Matt finally got serious, and with a crew of self-taught musicians and marching band ruffians, he assembled an ensemble that, to this day, exists at the exact intersection of innocence, optimism, ability and curiosity.

Anathallo’s early years were likewise packed, despite having seven or eight members at any given time. They released four independent EPs (one hand-painted, another packaged with dirt and wildflower seeds), stuffed their many odd instruments into every room that’d allow it (fans’ houses, 4-H clubs, churches, veterans halls), and slumbered under the roof of their green Dodge Caravan in hospital parking lots (these had the best lighting) when they were away from home, which was often. By the time the band released its first full-length in 2006—a shifting work of virtuosity and earnestness called Floating World—they’d racked up an astounding 18 national tours. The bulk of that year was also spent on the road (with two glockenspiels, as many an awed critic reported), and upon returning home, the band realized it was time to leave again.

Offered a permanent residency at a Chicago church (via friend and artist Tim Lowly), Anathallo moved en masse to the Windy City in January of 2007. They took up odd jobs tending to other people’s food, dogs and data, and practiced at Berry United Methodist for five hours each night. Taking their name’s Greek translation to heart (“to renew, refresh, or bloom again”), the crew’s current lineup tangled up their roots in new soil, cultivated their overlapping interests in literature, music and film, and grew heartily toward a new album. Following a trip out to California for Coachella, the seven Anathallians dropped their day-jobs and hunkered down in one of the church’s humid old rooms. With the daycare kids next door shooting them funny faces, the band wrote Canopy Glow, an album that finds the band in the same blessed headspace birthed by Mt. Pleasant (five of them are natives to the area, after all), but more focused than ever. Rumor has it, Anticon was the only label that Matt, Bret, Danny, Seth, Jeremiah, Erica and Jamie could all agree on.

Ray Metzker (°1931) is acknowledged as one of photography's true innovators since the early 1960’s. He is dedicated to exploring the formal potentials of black and white photography over the course of more than a dozen distinct bodies of work. Through cropping, multiple imagery, and other formal inventions, his work explores options for transforming the vocabulary of the photograph. From urban streetscapes and multiple imagery in the form of constructed composites, to dense and tangled landscapes, to mysterious and pure abstractions, Metzker has proven himself time and time again a master interpreter of the medium.
Yet his work does not rest solely on its inventiveness. While experimenting with multiple exposures, unusual juxtapositions, and the unexpected use of light and darkness, Metzker has imbued his images with an emotional resonance. By bisecting a streetscape with an intense ribbon of sunlight or a dense wall of shadow, he is able to evoke a feeling of hope or an aura of menace. It is this remarkable balance between technical virtuosity and humane considerations that has continued to make his work compelling over five decades.

Its not only Rock n Roll, Baby! Brings together for the first time a series of important works by musicians from the 1970s to our days, including Patti Smith, Brian Eno, Chicks on Speed, Fischerspooner, Devendra Banhart, Pete Doherty,... This exhibition, electrified by a unique collaboration with the Rock Werchter Festival, shows for the first time the other history of rock: the story of born musicians and artist in the world of art. Some twenty music icons are brought together for the first time, not to give a concert but to present their visual works. This is not about a movement, but about artists who have all followed individual roads, approaching art and music with an undivided soul. They show that these two means of expression are indivisible, despite their differences. Its not only Rock n Roll, Baby! or how the voice of rock emerged in the visual arts.

Nam June Paik (1932-2006) is seen as the inventor of video art. In the spirit of the Fluxus movement, he sought to connect art with everyday life. In his installations monitors, video players and televisions play a major role in a characteristic mix of art, entertainment and trans-culturalism. Good morning Mr. Orwell is an edited version of a video installation that Paik completed on New Year’s Day, 1984. Refuting the anti-utopian vision in George Orwell’s 1984, he created satellite connections between the United States, France and Germany. The event was broadcast on American public television and was seen by 25 million viewers worldwide. During Documenta 6, in 1977, artists presented their first live, international television broadcast. The Documenta 6 Satellite Telecast included performances by Nam June Paik, Charlotte Moorman, Joseph Beuys and Douglas Davis, and was broadcast in more than 25 countries.
This Ecran dArt is introduced by Jochen Saueracker, who for 20 years was Nam June Paik’s assistant at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

Hun erven blijven er ook heel streng op toezien dat de rechten voor uitvoering alleen verleend worden voor producties, die aan al hun eisen voldoen qua kwaliteit van de cast, het orkest, decors en de kostuums. Deze voorwaarden zijn er de reden van, dat men Porgy and Bess in deze tijd nog maar zelden op de planken ziet. De kosten van de productie zijn ook door het grote aantal medewerkers, ruim 130, heel hoog. Bovendien zijn voor de hoofdrollen vertolkers vereist, die in de operawereld een grote naam en een goede reputatie hebben. Alle rollen moeten, gezien de moeilijkheidsgraad van de songs, net als bij grote operahuizen in de wereld ook meerdere malen gecast zijn.

Porgy and Bess, dat van 14 mei tem 25 mei naar Stadsschouwburg komt, is dan ook een miljoenenproductie, die geheel wordt uitgevoerd in de geest en volgens de wensen van wijlen George Gershwin. Ruim zeventig jaar nadat Porgy and Bess in 1935 in première ging is deze volksopera – of musical, zo men wilt – nog altijd springlevend.

De emoties in de voorstelling over liefde, verdriet, wanhoop en eenzaamheid zijn tijdloos en grijpen het publiek nog altijd bij de strot. Gershwin weet in Porgy and Bess zijn onvergetelijke songs te combineren met het drama uit het boek van DuBose en Heyward, waarin kracht en kwetsbaarheid van de liefde voelbaar worden.

Consisting of 3 ex-Guns N Roses members (guitarist Slash, drummer Matt Sorum and bassist Duff McKagan) supplemented by ex-Stone Temple Pilot singer Scott Weiland and guitarist Dave Kushner of the 80?s punk band Wasted Youth. With 2 albums to their name (Contraband from 2004 and recently Libertad) these pedigree musicians have been traveling the world for a while now. On Sunday 30 March its Brussels turn.

In her oeuvre the American artist Sue de Beer originally explored the ambiguous twilight zone of American teen culture. In her more recent work she increasingly goes back further in history. A certain ‘gothic’ sensibility infuses all her works, and her name frequently appears in discussions regarding the reappraisal of romantic concepts and tropes in contemporary art.
 
In 2007 De Beer produced the ambitious film installation Permanent Revolution, a work that will be on show during the spring of 2008 in the round hall on the MuHKA’s ground floor. The rough basis for this work is the brief but turbulent history of the German Bauhaus and the deep ideological dissension within it. In De Beers’ reconstruction, the Bauhaus movement –against the apocalyptic experience of WWI- ignites in an ecstatic ode to colour, light and form. It is a striking parable for our current dark times: there is always light at the end of the tunnel somewhere, however disorienting and pale it may seem.

USA²  is a dual exhibition with photographic work by Peter Granser (an Austrian citizen who lives in Germany) and the USA-based Kate Schermerhorn. Both have a keen eye for the exaggerations, absurdities and stereotypes that decorate the edges of American popular culture. Their personal observations offer us diverse and critical points of view of the American way of life, but are always bathed in a subtle sense of humor. They show us the USA  ‘squared’ or with all its exaggerations and excesses, exhibited in a time when American elections flood our tv-screens with an abundance of issues this nation faces today.
 
Peter Granser (°1971) depicts in his series entitled Coney Island the eternally American dream. He reveals to us the seaside amusement park Coney Island (NY) that was created in the 19th century imagining the America of tomorrow and its new leisure activities. Coney Island is now rusted and dirty , but still so quitessentially American, that Granser presents to us its characteristic facets and morbid charm. On the strips of hot concrete floor, bejewelled exhibitionists can be spotted posing for pictures. Young women dressed in 1950s swimsuits look the part, with a streak of scarlet lipstick and high pony tails, but we also meet throwbacks from the 1970s New York gay scene,... These are all allusions to times past.
The British photographer Martin Parr, well known for his humorous social reportage, has clearly been an influence to Granser. The photographer even switched from black and white to colour after meeting Parr in 1997. One can also discover in his pictures a clear fascination for William Eggleston and Stephen Shore and their view of reality and everyday life.
 
The work of Kate Schermerhorn (°1966) focuses more on the West Coast of the USA, where she grew up and returned to after a period abroad. The images reveal the aspects of LA that relate to the reality/fantasy theme. She researches the tiny edge between the real and the unreal in different forms: a plastic cactus on the sandy ground of a real desert; a realistic looking rock turning out to be a stereo speaker... She continually asks herself: What is Los Angeles: La La Land? City of Angels? Entertainment Capital of the World?  City where Dreams are Made? Schermerhorn’s work is a detailed and critical observation of her culture; sometimes she tries to figure out what Americans do for fun and exactly why, while other series refer to the intercangeable nature of the real and the unreal in LA.  To escape in yet other images from all of this, into the vastness and contemplation of the Pacific Ocean.  Her work can be formally associated with the American observations by Walker Evans and the colour images of everyday life by William Eggleston.

Ant Farm was an innovative countercultural collective working in media, architecture and spectacle from the late 1960s through the 1970s. Their work embraces icons of American culture while simultaneously deconstructing and critiquing the underlying mechanism of the establishment these icons represent. No one piece could exemplify this more than the site installation Cadillac Ranch in which ten Cadillacs were buried fin-up in a field off Route 66. A pop spectacle that parodies consumerism with a tongue-in-cheek nod to 1970s site art, the piece, documented here on video, is an ironic celebration of the tail-fin as the ultimate expression of wasteful design in American culture. In Media Burn Ant Farm stages an explosive collusion of two of Americas most potent cultural symbols: the automobile and television. In creating a widely broadcast media image, Ant Farm managed to exploit the very medium it critiqued. In the same vain The Eternal Flame, a reenactment on video of the famous Zapruder footage of the Kennedy assassination, is conceived as a quintessential comment on the replacement of real experience and memory with its mass-media version, a phenomenon only too familiar today.
